How accurate are the eclipse paths on this map?

The dates, eclipse types, magnitudes, and durations come directly from Fred Espenak's published eclipse predictions (EclipseWise.com / NASA) — the standard reference astronomers use. The path lines on the map are simplified corridors we drew through the countries each eclipse crosses, not the precise centerline coordinates from official Besselian element calculations. Treat the map as a solid planning guide, not a survey-grade path — always check an official source before booking travel.

What's the difference between a total and an annular eclipse?

In a total eclipse, the Moon completely covers the Sun and the sky goes dark for a couple of minutes, revealing the Sun's corona. In an annular eclipse, the Moon is a bit farther from Earth in its orbit that day, so it looks slightly smaller than the Sun and can't fully cover it — leaving a bright ring, or "ring of fire," around the edge. A hybrid eclipse is total along part of its path and annular along the rest.

How is my local eclipse duration calculated?

We measure how far your checked location is from the eclipse's central path line, then taper the duration down from the maximum central duration at the centerline to zero at the edge of the path, using a typical path width estimated from that eclipse's type and duration. It's a reasonable estimate, not a precise calculation — actual local circumstances can vary.

What does the sky direction diagram show?

For your checked location and the selected eclipse's moment of greatest eclipse, we calculate the Sun's real position in the sky — how high above the horizon (altitude) and which compass direction (azimuth) — using the same solar-position engine as our Sunset Predictor tool. That tells you roughly where to look and whether the Sun will be high overhead or low near the horizon.

Why does the 100-year and 1000-year view have less detail?

We hand-verified real dates, types, durations, and rough paths for every central solar eclipse through about 2070 directly from Espenak's published predictions. Eclipse timing further into the future is still scientifically well-determined, but exact path precision naturally gets fuzzier the further out you go, since it depends on small uncertainties in Earth's rotation rate. Past 2070, and especially past 100 years, we switch to well-established long-term statistics instead of guessing at path coordinates we can't verify.
